FAQ
- Question:
-
Do We Really Need Halal Certified Products
- Answer:
-
With the food laws and regulations in the western countries, it is possible for consumers to know the ingredients of the food products they consume. However, with the variety of sources for food ingredients and the complexity of the manufacturing processes, it is not possible for most consumers to determine the exact source of those ingredients. Many ingredients can be produced from more than one source; some of the alternatives can be Haram. One could contact the manufacturer to determine the source of the ingredients. We certainly encourage consumers to do this. However, there are many reasons that cause manufacturers to change product ingredients, including cost, availability, etc. When a change is made, it is not necessarily obvious to the consumer. If the change is just the source of the product, for example, changing from beef gelatin to pork gelatin, the label will not change. If the change is a new ingredient, it must be printed on the product label and the consumer can detect it if he or she checks the label. Of course, most consumers would not bother to continue to check the ingredient label once they have confirmed the ingredients are all Halal. If that is the case, they would not notice a change in the ingredients.By having the product certified Halal by an authentic Halal certifier, the consumer benefits in a number of ways. First, they know someone with experience in food production and ingredients has thoroughly checked the ingredients, the source of the ingredients, the manufacturing process, and cleaning process and determined them to be Halal. Furthermore, the product remains under scrutiny during the certifying period, and any changes must continue to comply with the Halal production processes. The Halal symbol will be displayed on the product and is the indication that the product is Halal. The consumer only needs to locate the Halal logo on the product rather than reading the entire product label to know the product is Halal. If the mark disappears from the label or is not present on the same product in a different market, it means the product is not certified as Halal and the consumer should beware.Allah (S) knows best.
